In Cinema industry is hard to find women technicians But things have changed for the better. A few women are making a mark and gave their best and entertained us.

Sudha Kongara

Sudha Kongara worked as associate director for seven years with Mani Ratnam. She began her career as screenwriter in Mitr-My Friend (2002) which won the Best English Film of the year award at the 49th National Film Awards. Her movie credits include Andhra Andagadu (2008), a Telugu comedy film. Sudha’s first directorial venture in Tamil was Drohi (2010), a crime film during which she began writing a sports drama on boxing titled Irudhi Suttru (2016) also releasing as Saala Khadoos in Hindi, Guru (2017) in Telugu. She won Filmfare Award for Best Director- Tamil. Her next directorial is a thriller based on a real-life incident Soorarai Pottru with Suriya. Due to coronavirus pandemic, Soorarai Pottru movie is waiting for release.

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi born in Chennai, studied at Loyola College. She began her career as the lead editor who heads the lifestyle magazine Inbox 1305 and she has worked on a number of short films. Later Kiruthiga entered Kollywood industry and made her debut in the 2013 Tamil movie, Vanakkam Chennai for Red Giant Movies. It’s a romantic comedy film starring Shiva and Priya Anand. Kiruthiga also directed Kaali (2018) starring Vijay Anthony who has also produced and composed its music. The film was also released in Telugu language as Kaasi.

Halitha Shameem

Halitha Shameem is a Tamil film director, screenwriter and editor. She worked as an assistant director with Pushkar Gayathri, Mysskin and Samuthirakani. Her first Tamil movie is Poovarasam Peepee in 2014. It’s a children adventure film. She then directed the commercial successful movie Sillu Karupatti in 2019. The film is made with the genre of anthology consisting of four different stories. She won the JFW woman director of the year 2020 award. She has now completed filming of her next movie Aelay.

V Priya

Started her career as an assistant director to filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Suhasini Mani Ratnam. Her first romantic-comedy movie Kanda Naal Muthal (2005) starring Prasanna and Laila and followed it up with another super hit in Kannamoochi Yenada (2007) with Prithviraj and Sandhya in the lead. Her movie credits include Aadi Lakshmi Purana (2019), a Kannada Romantic Comedy film starring Nirup Bhandari, Radhika Pandit.

Madhumita

Madhumita made several short films during her early days. One of which won the best of the world category in BBC and she was honoured with the Singapore Student Award. In USA, she briefly worked with the Pirates of the Caribbean. Her debut film was the romantic drama Vallamai Tharayo (2008) starring Parthipan and Chaya Singh. The film completed a 100 days run at the box office and won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Family Film in 2008. Her second film was the comedy flick Kola Kolaya Mundhirika (2010) which was co-written by Crazy Mohan. Her next project, the bilingual romantic comedies, Moone Moonu Varthai (2015) in Tamil, Moodu Mukkallo Cheppalante in Telugu. KD (2019), a Drama film. Madhumita was awarded the Best Director at the UK Asian Film Festival 2019.
